Andros Island – May 2013

Autec Spring Craft Fair

The first half of May was a busy one. Kicking off things was the Autec Community Craft Fair. This happens twice a year and is always highly anticipated by Androsians and Autecnics alike.

These fairs are a great opportunity for the local vendors to showcase their products and also get to enjoy themselves too.

As always, the fabulous basket weaving skills were evident, what a great skill these ladies (and gents!) have. Wood carvers from Red Bays were there along with the infamous Henry Wallace – always a pleasure to see his skill in action.

Food was abundant – Conch Fritters, Guava Duff and of course, the Conch salad stand had long lines as usual.

 Red Bays Snapper Tournament

Saturday 18th brought about the Red Bays Tournament. This annual event is eagerly anticipated by local fishermen who want nothing more than to show off their talent and knowledge of the local fishing grounds.

Red Bays is located on the most NorthWesterly tip of Andros and is home to descendants of the islands oldest inhabitants.

The local park was buzzing on Friday, with live music and lots of festivities for the opening ceremony. On the day itself, weather conditions looked perfect close in, but all reports were a bumpy day the further out boats went. A total of 7 boats entered and everyone came back with good amounts of fish. More partying on the park afterwards along with the award ceremony for the victorious winners.

Andros Bahamas Cancer Society Walk

The following Monday was a national holiday and a charity walk was organized to aid cancer victims in Fresh Creek. Turnout was good and money raised for a great cause.
