Undoubtedly the number one reason why visitors come to Andros. Miles of uncrowded flats, abundance of the targeted species (bonefish), lack of competiton and amazing wildlife to top it off, Andros can not be beaten!
There are any number of excellent and experienced bonefish guides on Andros, we recommend a few here, but that is by no means an exhaustive list. Everyone from your cabbie to your porter can recommend a good guide. Andros is simply riddled with them!
The local guides can put you on fish day in and day out, and if conditions are not conducive, they can also put you on the best bar in the neighbourhood!
Any one of our recommended list can give you an experience of a lifetime and are personnally backed by us in terms of quality and experience in their field. Click on their images for links.
Alvin is an experienced guide who knows Andros Bonefishing like the back of his hand. Like all the guides on our list, he is in great demand, so book early to avoid disappointment.
Soloman is a fun-loving and a very talented and personable guide. He will go over and above for you and provide a fishing experience that will match and exceed your expectations.
Lavado is a Staniard Creek native. He is a guide who loves all kinds of fishing and a day out on the water is never wasted.
Greg is another guide calling Staniard Creek in North Andros home although he originally comes from the Stafford Creek area. Serious about his craft he has built a solid reputation and has many regular clients coming every year to fish with him.
Hermon's Andros Bonefishing
Hermon Bain has been fishing the waters of North Andros for 20+ years, and like his father before him, has one the best reputations on Andros.
The number 'two' reason why you want to visit Andros. The third longest barrier reef in the world is there for the taking. Small Hope Bay Lodge has been catering to divers for over 40 years, and there is a reason they are the number one!
Delivering high quality dive experiences including exclusive privately guided dive trips and Blue Hole exploration, Small Hope has it all.
Whether you are staying at one of the resorts on North Andros, or going it alone in a villa, you are sure to experience the beautiful waters of Andros. Snorkelling is one of those activities where you can 'go it alone'.
Most of our rental properties include snorkel equipment so you can simply jump in and explore at your own leisure. The creeks hold a wealth of fish-life. Juveniles live here until ready to head to the main reef, so plenty of activity can be seen just from outside your doorstep.
For a view of the barrier reef and beyond though, you want to hire a local boat. You can be at the reef within 5-10 minutes boat ride, depending on your accommodation. Here you can see our healthy corals, reef fish and stunning scenary - it's as easy as that!
Deep Sea/Reef fishing:
There are a limited number of guides who can provide this kind of experience, but be assured that those that do, can.
Targeting species such as Tuna, Wahoo and Mahi-Mahi is the order of the day, although it is not unknown to also see Marlin or Sailfish along the way too. In season, fishing for Grouper, Mutton Snapper and YellowTail Snapper is also on the menu. Most of your properties and guides will also be able to prepare, cook and serve your 'catch of the day' for you.
Here is where you get to experience Andros Island in it's essence. Hire a local driver to show you the island to get the most of your time here. You can, of course, do it yourself with a car rental (few and far between on Andros) and for the adventurous - there are very little road signs and not a traffic light in sight!
A driver will be able to show you everything the island has to offer, from the deep and mysterious Blue Holes, creative art of Androsia, Sponge farmers of Red Bays to the numerous Basket weavers, a local guide is a must.
Dining on Andros can be a variation on the scale. Andros has plenty of local eateries, conch stalls and impromtou dining stands. It also has the friendly atomospheres of Small Hope Bay Lodge, Hanks Place and Taste and See along with the ultra in dining experiences, Kamalame Cay. Imagine floating along on the ferry from the mainland, just a short 2 minute journey, but feels like a lifetime experience. Walk along the palm lined pathway to the Kamalame Great House dining room, greeted by Tiki Torch light along the way.
Inside, you will find an airy, caribbean inspired Great House, with a friendly and accomodating staff offering just the right amount of 'presence' for you to feel comfortable and undoubtedly the best cusine on the island.
The choice is yours - although of course, we recommend you sample it all!
